Sulian Tan Wijaya: Encouraging Women To Transform The Landscape Of Business

Upon completing her legal education at The National University of Singapore and successfully passing the Bar examinations, Sulian Tan Wijaya undertook a short tenure at Hongkong Bank (Singapore), where she managed high-net-worth clients before relocating to Indonesia. In Indonesia, she became a part of Standard Chartered Bank, contributing to the establishment of its branch in the nation’s third-largest city. Sulian ascended through the ranks to ultimately oversee the branch, which provided comprehensive banking services to both corporate and retail clients. Her role as a senior banker presented a significant learning opportunity, as she was responsible for leading all facets of banking operations in a foreign environment.

Upon her return to Singapore, Sulian held the position of Senior Vice President in a hospitality group that managed multiple hotels across different cities in Asia. Subsequently, she transitioned to a real estate group, where she served as Senior Vice President overseeing a prestigious shopping mall located on Orchard Road and a Grade A office building in the Central Business District.

Subsequently, Sulian took on a role at the Singapore Tourism Board, where she led the Tourism Shopping Division. Following this, she became the general manager for The Fullerton Heritage at HK group Sinoland, which managed several prestigious properties situated along Singapore’s renowned Marina Bay. It was during this time that Sulian was approached by her current employer, Savills, to establish their Retail & Lifestyle business.

Throughout her career, Sulian has been presented with numerous leadership opportunities, demonstrating her willingness to engage in entirely new business ventures or roles. She has consistently embraced change, welcomed the challenges associated with managing new enterprises, and thrived in competitive environments.

    Essential Qualities of a Leader

Contemporary leaders require resilience to navigate the ever-present changes that characterize our world. In an increasingly competitive environment, it is essential for leaders to possess steadfast determination and the bravery to confront emerging challenges and effectively handle crises. Furthermore, leaders must commit to continuous learning, foster collaboration among their teams, and motivate their personnel to reach their fullest potential.

Inspiring the Future Generations of Women in Business

Sulian aims to motivate other women to step beyond their comfort zones, explore new industries, work in different countries, and embrace new languages and cultures while establishing a successful career. She wants women to understand that it is entirely feasible to be a mother, nurture their children, and simultaneously assume leadership positions within their organizations. “Mothers, particularly single mothers, exhibit remarkable strength and resilience, and their capabilities far outweigh the sacrifices they endure in raising their children,” added Sulian.

    Steps to Empower Women

Sulian highlighted, that there are already many examples of very successful women who seamlessly juggle raising children, family life and their jobs. Many of them can be as good as, if not better than, some of their male counterparts if they believe in their own abilities. Businesses who value these women and provide whatever support they can for them to thrive, will undoubtedly benefit from their contributions.

    Advice to the Entrepreneurs

“The world we live in is changing so fast, with the rapid evolution of technology and constantly changing consumer trends. My advice would be to embrace and adapt to these changes and never stop learning,” says Sulian.

Additionally, to drive innovation, leaders should engage their young workers and maybe even pick up new skills and knowledge from this digital-savvy group. By encouraging innovation and empowering employees to bring new ideas to the table, leaders will be in a stronger position to innovate and stay ahead of their competition.

Another key trait is humility. It is easy for successful leaders become complacent or even arrogant, but humility goes a long way in building strong relationships and bonds with their employees and business partners.

    My Role Model

“Throughout my life, my mom has always been my role model. She had a thriving career for decades. She is such a capable woman and always gives the best advice be it for work or personal life. Mom always encouraged me to be a multi-hyphenate, so I was inspired to represent my school and college in athletics, swimming, and squash. While in Law School, I also played keyboards in a rock band, became a DJ in dance clubs, a model, and a television host.”

Sulian believe that all these different skills she has learnt had a great influence on her working style and thought process. Sulian’s mom also taught her to always be humble and help those who were less fortunate.

    Overcoming the Challenges

The most considerable challenge that Sulian encountered was likely when she was tasked with managing an entire bank in her twenties. Compounding this difficulty was her relocation to a new country, where she needed to acquire a new language, grasp an unfamiliar business culture, and lead a team that sometimes-exhibited skepticism due to her status as a foreigner and a woman.

Sulian had reached the pinnacle of her banking career when the Asian Financial Crisis struck, accompanied by violent riots in Indonesia. During this tumultuous period, the Indonesian currency plummeted, losing almost 90 percent of its value in comparison to the US Dollar. However, witnessing the resilience and composure of her Indonesian clients, who managed to retain their sense of humor, provided her with significant strength and inspiration.

    Guidance for Emerging Leaders

Aspiring leaders ought to possess a strong conviction that their current business or occupation aligns with their genuine passions and interests. This realization constitutes a significant portion of the journey toward success, as engaging in work that one enjoys substantially increases the likelihood of achieving favorable outcomes.

Leaders should dedicate their time to training their employees and enabling them to assume greater responsibility for the success of the business. At times, it may be necessary to make minor sacrifices, such as working late or during weekends. Although failures may occur, it is through these setbacks and errors that we enhance our capabilities.

    Future Roadmap

Sulian possesses several highly influential friends who have invited her to collaborate on a range of intriguing technology and lifestyle projects. While she remains passionate about her full-time position, she intends to assume only minor roles in these initiatives for the next few years. Additionally, she will persist in actively overseeing her investment portfolio, aiming to enhance her ongoing passive income, which will prove beneficial when she ultimately chooses to retire.\

  • Tanja Schjellerup: A Visionary Leader Changing The Face Of Online Education

Tanja Schjellerup: A Visionary Leader Changing The Face Of Online Education

Tanja Schjellerup, CEO at Skolen Online, began her educational leadership journey with a desire to make learning more accessible and impactful for all. Tanja has always believed education is a key driver of change and innovation. Her work in project management and business development and involvement with platforms like Skolen Online have allowed her to combine her passion for education with her skills in strategy. This has inspired Tanja to lead initiatives that rethink how education can be delivered, especially in a digital age where flexibility and access are paramount.

    Qualities of a leader

“In the educational field, a leader must be visionary, empathetic, and adaptable. Vision is crucial for driving innovation and anticipating the future needs of learners. Empathy helps in understanding the diverse challenges students and educators face, especially as the world shifts more toward digital learning environments,” added Tanja.

Leaders must have a forward-thinking mindset, not only anticipating the needs of education today or tomorrow but also for the long term. This allows them to implement adaptability effectively. Adaptability is key to navigating the rapid technological advancements that are transforming education, from how it designs curricula to engage learners.

    About Skolen Online

Skolen Online is an innovative platform that operates in the educational technology sector. Skolen Online functions both as a Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS), providing tools for both educators and students to enhance the learning experience. The platform focuses on making education accessible through technology, particularly for K12 students and up till the age of 24.

“At Skolen Online, we serve a diverse community of students, ranging from those who experience challenges in traditional classroom settings to international learners and homeschoolers. Our focus is on providing flexible, tailored learning opportunities through online classes, ensuring that each student can learn at their own pace and in an environment that fosters both academic success and personal well-being. We offer live, interactive classes as well as self-study options, giving students access to high-quality education regardless of their location or individual needs,” adds Tanja.

    An unforgettable legacy

Tanja hopes to leave a legacy that goes beyond just being a female leader in education and entrepreneurship. Tanja’s message to future generations is that success stems from dedication, vision, and the courage to pursue innovation not gender. She wants to inspire others to see themselves as entrepreneurs first, driven by their love for what they do, rather than letting gender define their path. “Ultimately, I believe that true progress will come when we move the conversation from gender to passion, innovation, and creating meaningful impact in the fields we are committed to,” adds Tanja.

    Beating the odds

One of the hardest challenges Tanja faced as a leader was the first time she had to fire someone she had personally hired. Tanja says It’s an incredibly tough position to be in, especially when you’ve invested time and energy into building that relationship.

However, she realized that being a leader sometimes requires making difficult decisions for the greater good of the team and the business. It was a moment where she had to learn to “own it, move on” accept responsibility, make the decision with confidence, and keep moving forward. That experience taught her the importance of balancing empathy with decisiveness, and have carried that lesson with her ever since.

    Leveraging technology

With Skolen Online, Tanja has focused on using technology to solve real-world educational challenges. One of the key innovations has been making learning platforms more flexible and customizable for both students and educators. Her role has involved driving the use of tools that allow educators to easily integrate their curricula into digital platforms while ensuring that students have access to high-quality, interactive learning experiences.

The gap the business world must bridge

The business world must evolve beyond the idea of simply “supporting women” as a separate initiative and start integrating women into leadership as a natural and necessary part of business growth. First, businesses should focus on creating equal opportunities for all entrepreneurs and leaders, regardless of gender. This can be achieved by building inclusive mentorship networks, ensuring access to capital for female entrepreneurs, and implementing policies that support work-life balance for all leaders, not just women.

Moreover, it’s important to break away from the notion that women need to “fit” into male-dominated environments. Instead, businesses should foster a culture that values diverse leadership styles and creates environments where innovation thrives, no matter who is at the helm. Lastly, representation matters. Ensuring that women are visible in all leadership areas, from boards to executive roles, will inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs to pursue their passions without limitations based on gender.

Advise to the aspiring women leaders

“If you want to make a real and significant change, the first and most important step is to have passion for what you do. Passion fuels persistence and creativity, which are essential when facing challenges or pushing boundaries in your field. Without genuine passion and commitment, it’s difficult to stay committed when the road gets tough or when you need to navigate uncharted territory. Leaders who truly care about their work inspire others to join them, creating momentum for change.”

    Future roadmap

Tanja says, “Looking ahead, my roadmap is focused on further expanding Skolen Online into a global educational platform that serves a wide range of students, from those who thrive in non-traditional learning environments to those needing more personalised paths to success. I envision growing our offerings, incorporating more languages and curricula to support learners worldwide.”

Tanja’s goal is to continue developing innovative learning environments that empower students to learn at their own pace while maintaining a strong connection to the educators and resources that guide them. In addition to scaling Skolen Online, she aims to leverage my experience to mentor individuals passionate about making a difference in their fields. Whether through mentoring, advisory roles, or being a board member, she wants to support entrepreneurs, leaders, and innovators who are dedicated to driving change. As long as the field aligns with her passions and knowledge, Tanja is committed to providing guidance and sharing insights to help others succeed.

Nermine Rubin: Providing Water, Food, And HOPE To Remote African Villages

Nermine Rubin stands out as one of the most inspiring women in the business world.  Her leadership journey is deeply rooted in her personal experiences. Immigrated from Egypt with her family was transformative, as she witnessed her parents’ resilience and sacrifices. This instilled in her a desire to give back and contribute to a greater cause. Founding Water 4 Mercy allowed her to channel that passion into action by addressing water scarcity and agricultural challenges in Africa. Her inspiration comes from a commitment to “repair the world,” and every project she takes on is an opportunity to empower communities to become self-sufficient.

Water 4 Mercy, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to providing sustainable water and agricultural solutions in Africa. The organization operates within the humanitarian and development sectors, focusing on food security, renewable energy, and education.

“Our mission is to empower underserved communities with the tools and skills to thrive.”

    Essential qualities for a leader

Nermine believes empathy, integrity, and perseverance are crucial for a leader today. “Empathy allows you to understand the needs of those you lead and serve, while integrity builds trust and credibility. Perseverance is vital because leadership is full of challenges, and staying the course is essential to making a lasting impact. For me, leadership is about serving others and being adaptable in an ever-changing world,” added Nermine, Founder, CEO, Water 4 Mercy.

    Overcoming the challenges

One of the most significant challenges Nermine faced was ensuring the sustainability of the projects in remote underserved communities. “It’s not enough to provide water; you have to ensure that the systems are maintained and that the local population is empowered to manage them. We overcame this by integrating education and community engagement into every project, ensuring that locals were trained in the operation and maintenance of their water systems and agricultural methods. This approach has been critical to our success and long-term impact,” added Nermine.

Innovation Changes the face of the organization

Water 4 Mercy has introduced innovative solutions like solar-powered wells and drip irrigation systems, transforming entire communities by providing sustainable access to water and improving food security. The organization has also established Agricultural Innovation and Technology Centers (AITEC) to equip students and farmers with advanced skills, blending modern technology with traditional farming practices. By focusing on long-term sustainability, Water 4 Mercy ensure that the projects create lasting change.

Advice to the aspiring leaders and entrepreneurs

“Stay curious and be willing to take risks. Innovation often comes from exploring new ideas and embracing change. Do not be afraid to challenge traditional methods and push boundaries. Surround yourself with a strong team and listen to different perspectives, as collaboration can spark groundbreaking ideas. Lastly, never lose sight of your purpose your passion is what drives innovation.”

    Steps to empower women leaders

The business world needs to foster more inclusive environments where women are encouraged to take on leadership roles. This includes offering mentorship, equal opportunities for advancement, and recognition of women’s contributions. Companies should also prioritize flexibility, as many women balance professional responsibilities with family life. Empowering women in leadership roles is not just a moral imperative it’s essential for business success and innovation.

    Changes to support women leaders

Businesses need to create more spaces for women in leadership through mentorship, equal pay, and leadership development programs. Policies that support work-life balance are essential, as many women juggle multiple roles. It’s also important for businesses to recognize and promote women’s achievements, offering them the same opportunities for advancement as their male counterparts. When women thrive, so do businesses.

    My role model

“My parents have been my greatest mentors. Their courage and perseverance during our immigration journey inspired me to pursue my dreams with resilience and faith. Their sacrifices taught me the importance of hard work and giving back to others. Professionally, I’ve also been inspired by leaders like Mother Teresa, whose compassion and commitment to humanity have shaped my approach to servant leadership,” elaborated Nermine.

    Future roadmap

Looking forward, Water 4 Mercy aims to expand our reach across Africa, with new projects in Uganda and South Africa. The organization is also focused on scaling up the Agricultural Innovation and Technology Centers to equip more students and communities with the skills necessary for long-term success. The NGO also plans to continue fostering partnerships with organizations dedicated to renewable energy, sustainable development, and agricultural innovation, ensuring that the organization remains at the forefront of impactful, life-changing solutions.

    Words of wisdom

“I hope to leave a legacy that encourages women to step into leadership roles with confidence and purpose. I want to show that women can excel in any field, including sectors like sustainability and development. My hope is that future generations will see that through dedication and vision, they too can make a profound impact on the world, whether they are leading a nonprofit, a business, or any other venture,” concluded Nermine.

    The leadership journey

“My leadership journey began with a deep passion for helping others reach their full potential, both personally and professionally. Early in my career, I realized that leadership wasn’t just about guiding a team toward a common goal, but about empowering individuals to discover their strengths and overcome challenges. My experience with overcoming health challenges and transitioning from equestrian dreams to entrepreneurial success fuelled my desire to create a people-first consulting firm. I wanted to build a business where every voice mattered and where the focus was on both personal growth and professional excellence. The inspiration for becoming a leader in my field comes from a genuine commitment to shaping the future of empowerment, not just for myself, but for everyone I have the privilege to work with,” says Emily Hartstone, Owner& CEO, From the Hart Management.

The key qualities of a leader

“In today’s fast-paced and ever-evolving business world, a successful leader must embody a few key qualities. First and foremost, adaptability is essential being open to change and able to pivot quickly in response to new challenges or opportunities. Second, emotional intelligence is crucial, as it allows leaders to connect with their teams on a deeper level, fostering a culture of trust, empathy, and collaboration. Vision is another vital quality; a leader must be able to see beyond the present and inspire others with a clear and compelling direction for the future. Finally, integrity and authenticity are non-negotiable. Leaders must lead by example, staying true to their values and principles, even in difficult times. These qualities, combined with a genuine commitment to the growth and well-being of both the business and its people, are what set apart effective leaders in today’s complex business environment.”

Through our platform, HartCenteredLife, we have also expanded into the self-improvement and personal development space, empowering individuals to achieve their best in life and business.”

Advice to future leaders and entrepreneurs

My advice to leaders and entrepreneurs aspiring to drive innovation is to start by cultivating a mindset of curiosity and openness. Innovation thrives when you’re willing to question the status quo and explore new possibilities, even if they seem unconventional. Encourage a culture of experimentation within your team, where failures are seen as valuable learning opportunities rather than setbacks.

Another key piece of advice is to stay deeply connected with the needs and desires of your customers or clients. The most impactful innovations often come from a deep understanding of the challenges people face and a commitment to solving them in creative ways. Listen actively, gather feedback, and use those insights to guide your innovation efforts.

Finally, don’t be afraid to lead with heart and purpose. Innovation is not just about creating something new; it’s about creating something meaningful. When you align your innovations with your core values and the positive impact you want to make, you’ll not only drive success in your field but also inspire those around you to contribute their best ideas and energy. Remember, the most successful innovations are those that resonate deeply with people and make a lasting difference.

    Beating the odds

“One of the most significant challenges I faced as a leader was navigating the early stages of my health journey while running and growing my business. Being diagnosed with Leukemia and Graves’ Disease not only posed personal challenges but also required me to rethink how I could effectively lead my team and continue serving our clients during such a critical time. The key to overcoming this challenge was embracing vulnerability and open communication. I decided to be transparent with my team about what I was going through, which allowed us to rally together and find new ways to support one another. I also leaned heavily on my daily practice of the Silva Method, which helped me maintain a positive mindset and focus on what I could control,” adds Emily.

    The future roadmap

“Our future roadmap is strategically designed to build on our current successes while expanding our impact and reach. In the short term, our focus is on enhancing the core aspects of our business, including refining our consulting services, scaling our event production capabilities, and growing the HartCenteredLife™ platform. We’re committed to deepening our relationships with clients and stakeholders, implementing innovative solutions, and leveraging technology to improve our service delivery,” concluded Emily.

Creating Best Places to Work: The Inspiring Origins of HRBOOST®

The HR firm market is evolving rapidly with a focus on technology, flexibility, and specialized services to meet the changing needs of businesses and their employees. Many HR firms are leveraging technology to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and enhance client services. This includes the use of AI for recruitment, data analytics for workforce management, and cloud-based solutions for HR functions. The shift towards remote and hybrid work models has led to increased demand for HR solutions that support flexible work arrangements, remote team management, and virtual onboarding. HRBOOST® is one such firm that offers a full range of services on both a consulting and outsourced basis. “Our solutions are based on strategic HR leadership and the latest thinking in the field of human resource management. Whether you are simply looking for guidance on a particular human resources matter or to implement a complete human resources support solution, HRBOOST® can add value to your business. We ground our practice between the two fundamental constructs of efficiency and effectiveness. Thus, we aim to be proactive not just responsive,” adds Nicole Martin, Founder, HRBOOST®.

    The inception story

I founded HRBOOST® in July 2010. As Founder and CEO (Chief Empowerment Officer), I have the privilege of leading a high-performance team of HR leaders who partner with businesses to meet them wherever they are on their journey to becoming the best place to work. We have experienced tremendous growth, and nearly every client has been sourced via word of mouth.

HRBOOST® has served businesses across various industry sectors, including Professional Services, Non-Profit, High Tech, Manufacturing, Staffing Firms, Hospitality, and Healthcare environments, to name a few. Our clients are typically high-growth businesses with 50 to 250 employees, though we have also served smaller and larger businesses with up to 500 employees on a project basis. We specialize in building HR departments from scratch and are proudly recognized as a 2017 Annual Awardee for Business Excellence (AABE) by the Daily Herald Business Ledger.

    The lady behind the curtain

In 2010, Nicole set out on a mission to find another business seeking to build HR from scratch and make it the Best & Brightest. “Our first Shared Service client signed on with 10 employees and $10M in revenue. Within 24 months HRBOOST® partnered as it scaled to over 150 employees and $28M in revenue. The business achieved Best & Brightest recognition in 2012 and remained there through acquisition. The business was acquired in 2013 for $58M and HRBOOST® converted talent and sustained contracts through one year past acquisition. The rest is history. Today, we meet businesses wherever they are on their journey to be the Best & Brightest.”

    The initial challenge

The greatest enemy of success is fear. With high growth comes significant challenges. “I needed to secure financing, attract skilled talent who believed in our brand promise, and, most importantly, overcome fear. As a disruptor in the industry, attracting attention from major competitors and receiving acquisition offers before realizing profitability were real concerns. Staying true to the vision, adhering to my values, and maintaining faith led to the development of a strong team. Together, we bring joy and purpose to people through their work.”

    Mission and Vision

“I lead a high-performance team of HR leaders who partner with businesses to meet them wherever they are on their journey to becoming a best place to work. We have experienced tremendous growth, and nearly every client has been sourced via word of mouth. Results matter, and we measure our success against our own standard of excellence, ensuring that HR makes a tangible impact on the businesses we serve. HRBoost® offers a full range of services on both a consulting and outsourced basis. Our solutions are based on strategic HR leadership and the latest thinking in human resource management. Whether you are seeking guidance on a specific HR matter or looking to implement a comprehensive HR support solution, HRBoost® can add value to your business. We ground our practice in the fundamental principles of efficiency and effectiveness, aiming to be proactive rather than just responsive. Internally, our core values are practiced by our team and become tangible through peer-based recognition, fostering a common understanding of these values.”

“We offer a range of services that allow our clients to engage with us on an à la carte, project, or retainer basis. This flexibility provides multiple ways for clients to contract with us. The Leadership Journey

“In essence, my journey has been about driving meaningful change and shaping leadership teams that reflect a wide range of experiences and perspectives.

This whole journey started when I was earning my post-graduate degrees in Marketing and Managerial Leadership from American University in London and City University. I found myself attracted to the world of global executive search and international business consulting. That passion I had was driven by a fascination with how placing the right people in the right roles can lead to transformative organizational change.

Early in my career, I observed that diverse teams often outperform others as they bring a variety of perspectives that enhance creativity and problem-solving. As I advanced professionally, I became increasingly aware of the leadership disparities related to gender and diversity, which motivated me to focus on creating more inclusive search processes. That is why you’ll find that I always prioritize diversity in executive search. I aim to promote equitable opportunities and build dynamic, representative leadership teams,” adds Dr. Nairouz.

Acadia Insurance: Passionately Emphasizes A Deep Understanding Of Customers, Tackling Unresolved Challenges

The insurance industry is navigating a period of rapid change, driven by technological advancements, evolving consumer expectations, and global challenges. Companies that adapt to these trends and leverage technology effectively are likely to lead in the competitive market. Acadia Insurance specializes in commercial property casualty insurance. Our company began in 1992 insuring businesses in Maine. “Today we offer insurance programs for small and midsize businesses throughout New England and New York State with local offices in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.  Acadia Insurance is a member company of W. R. Berkley Corporation,” says Simone Grimes, CFO, Acadia Insurance.

    The Leadership Journey

Simone Grimes, CPA started her career, not in finance, but by venturing into the world of the culinary arts, opening restaurants and crafting speciality vegetarian delights. Her unexpected success in the culinary domain prompted a shift from perfecting recipes to navigating the intricacies of scaling a business.

In her early twenties, Simone found herself raising capital, presenting growth strategies to investors, and delving into the meticulous quantification and communication of key performance indicators (KPIs). Despite her relative inexperience, she viewed the capital entrusted to her as a personal mission to generously reward investors who placed their trust in her. As she approached her mid-twenties, she successfully expanded her culinary empire to encompass multiple restaurant and real estate assets.

As the business expanded, Simone was careful to ensure she had the full support and buy-in from the communities in which she operated.

Within a span of five years, she steered her ventures through a prosperous M&A disposition, culminating in a significant payday for everyone involved. This pivotal experience not only solidified Simone’s approach to subsequent endeavors but also instilled in her a profound understanding of the importance of delivering returns to shareholders, comprehending valuation multiples, fostering bottom-line growth, executing ambitious strategies, and building a team of talented and reliable individuals to support her vision.

Simone Grimes, armed with early career confidence and a burgeoning reputation in the business community, was recognized for her business acumen being offered the opportunity to play a key role in the insurance industry.

After two decades of experience in the financial services industry, including working with a large P&C carrier, auditing large banks and insurance companies with Big 4 public accounting firms, and close to a decade spent in real estate finance, she joined Acadia Insurance as their Chief Financial Officer in 2021.

    Beating the odds

The escalating frequency and severity of global risks will require a renewed focus on the industry’s capacity and readiness to react as society’s financial safety net. Insurers will need to invest in proactive risk management by leveraging analytics, technology and the internet of things (IoT). By embracing cutting-edge technologies, insurers are seeking to detect and prevent threats early on.

The impact of three years of heightened M&A activity will reshape distribution channels and require insurers to adapt. As tech savvy customers continue to expect insurers to meet them where they are, insurers will need to invest in advanced technologies, which includes investing in augmenting employee’s skill sets. With an increase in technology, insurers are looking to AI to help them maintain a customer centric look and feel.

    Prime Focus

Maximizing Risk Adjusted Returns, Nurturing Talent, and Upholding Integrity. In pursuit of maximizing long-term risk-adjusted returns, the business maintains a proactive approach, comprehensively assessing current exposures while anticipating the impacts of a dynamic environment on future risks. With a decentralized structure, the business remains intimately connected with customers, offering tailored and innovative solutions with swift decision-making capabilities.

    The Work Culture

The team culture at Acadia is an embodiment of its guiding principles, which form the bedrock for a robust future. With an unwavering commitment to integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct in all endeavours, Acadia places a premium on achieving financial objectives to ensure strength, viability, and continued investment in both its people and business. The culture is characterized by a relentless pursuit of improvement, rejecting complacency and embracing a proactive stance to enhance operations.

    Influencing the Industry

“We still have a long way to go in terms of proving out the ESG hypothesis statements.  There is much more to be done to demonstrate above average returns for sustainable investing which means creating quantifiable metrics that resonate with Wall Street. The cumulative flow of investments into US ESG funds has been flat to slightly negative since the first quarter of 2022. So much of ESG is qualitative, which makes it challenging to get to materiality. I am hopeful that Artificial Intelligence will help reinvigorate this space because of the immense amount of data it can access and analyze. If you can incorporate the immense computational capabilities of an AI model into crunching all the data with transparency that will bring legitimacy back to it,” adds Simone.

    Achievements

Being the first in the U.S. to receive the Mindful Employer Designation, Acadia Insurance underscores its dedication to prioritizing people within its business framework. This accolade symbolizes a steadfast commitment to fostering purposeful work, engaging leadership, and overall well-being for all employees. The designation is a testament to Acadia’s proactive approach, as reflected in the results of an anonymous survey crafted and conducted by Mindful Employer.

    Advice to the Young Entrepreneur

Simone Grimes’ words to young business leaders is to not shy away from the financial services sector as a great place to make a difference for society while having a great career. The finance industry has historically been a catalyst for progress. Financial products shape behaviours (both instances) and help organizations manage through economic and societal changes. Young business leaders who invest in the industry and are ambitious enough to develop new products and services could help shape behaviours and norms for years to come, and in so doing help create the society they want to see.

     The leadership journey

“My leadership journey has always been about supporting people and businesses in growing together. During my time with companies like Coca-Cola, DHL, and American Medical Systems, I approached HR with an entrepreneurial mindset, finding innovative ways to drive business growth, particularly within smaller European business units of larger international organizations. I saw how HR often felt disconnected from what these teams needed, which led me to start Europe HR Solutions. What began as a one-person consultancy offering multilingual HR expertise to med and tech companies has, over the last 15 years, grown into a pan-European HR outsourcing provider. This transformation has been fueled by a team of passionate HR consultants who share my commitment to making a real difference for our clients,” says Inez Vermeulen, CEO & Founder, Europe-HR-Solutions.

    Beating the odds

“One major challenge was navigating the complex web of cross-border employment regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic. We overcame this by developing a flexible compliance framework that could adapt to the changing legal landscape in different European countries. This proactive approach allowed us to guide our clients with confidence and clarity through a very uncertain time.”

The essential qualities of a leader

“Compassion, resilience, and strategic vision are essential qualities in HR leadership. For me, leading with empathy means truly understanding the challenges people face and guiding them through those challenges with care and support. I believe that a successful leader not only drives the business forward but also prioritizes the well-being of their team. To nurture these qualities in both myself and my team, I go beyond traditional professional development. I actively invest in their personal growth by teaching techniques for mind control and stress management. These practices have been invaluable in helping us all stay balanced and focused, especially during high-pressure situations. By creating a supportive environment where we can openly share and manage our stresses, we strengthen our ability to navigate the complexities of our work together, ensuring that we can consistently deliver our best, both for each other and for our clients.”

These tools streamline operations and provide valuable insights that help our clients stay competitive in a rapidly changing market. Additionally, we place a strong emphasis on the compliance health of European organizations, ensuring they meet all regulatory requirements. This focus on compliance not only reduces risks for businesses but also strengthens their overall operational resilience.”

    Going with the industry trends

“One of our most impactful initiatives has been the creation of a flexible, remote-first HR support model. This initiative was designed to meet the growing demand for remote work and ensure that our clients receive consistent, high-quality HR support, regardless of their location. It has significantly improved our service delivery and client satisfaction.”

    Achievements

“Europe HR Solutions has been recognized as one of the leading HR consultancies in Europe. We’ve received praise for our innovative approach to outsourcing HR services, particularly in how we tailor our solutions to meet the unique needs of small to mid-sized enterprises. Personally, I’m also excited to announce the launch of my book, How to Master HR in Europe, which shares insights and strategies for navigating the complex HR landscape across Europe,” proudly says Inez Vermeulen.

    Staying Ahead of the trends

“HR is rapidly evolving from a traditional support function to a strategic partner in business. We anticipate a growing focus on data-driven decision-making, AI integration, and employee well-being. To stay ahead, we’re not only investing in technology but also prioritizing the mental and emotional well-being of our team and clients. This holistic approach ensures we can offer proactive, strategic HR consulting that meets the challenges of tomorrow.”

    Aligning with the business goals

“We focus on creating a culture of transparency, open communication, and continuous improvement.
